When I spoke with author and entrepreneur Juan Battle, it was clear—his story isn’t about what broke him, but what built him. On The Resilient Author Podcast, Juan opened up about his book How I Turned My Pain into Purpose and how his hardest moments became the foundation for his mission.
Growing up in New Jersey, Juan made choices that led to incarceration and setbacks that could have defined him. But instead of letting those moments end his story, he started asking what they were meant to teach him. “I realized the purpose of my pain was to help others push through theirs,” he told me. His book isn’t about glorifying survival—it’s about doing the inner work. Each chapter includes reflection questions that guide readers toward healing and self-awareness.
His turning point came when he learned he’d been granted custody of his son. “That’s when I had to look in the mirror and admit I was the problem,” he said. From there, the work began—accountability, growth, and a commitment to becoming better for himself and his family.
Interestingly, Juan didn’t plan to be an author. As a musician, he’d spent years writing lyrics, never realizing those same skills would one day help him write a book. “I didn’t have a blueprint,” he said. “Just my thoughts and a keyboard.”
Today, his brand Believe by Battle offers clothing, books, and free online support for people who need someone to listen. “If we can stop someone from making a life-altering decision just by hearing them out, that’s purpose.”
Juan’s story reminds us that purpose doesn’t come from comfort—it comes from climbing out of the places people expected you to stay in.
